It's Tuesday, Where Are You?

Today I am in 1880s India and the Ibis has just docked in Calcutta. The Ibis is a former slaver (slave ship) that is to be refurbished as a transport for opium to China. I've just had to walk through an opium manufacturing facility and was sickened by much of what I saw. I don't know what the future holds, but I suspect it will have something to do with a vision I had of a large two-masted schooner. (Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh)

  2. That book was short listed for the Booker - I'd like to read it. I didn't really know what it was about - looks good.

  3. fleurfisher: The story ambles along right now, which seems appropriate. The author is quite the writer and I'm enjoying his prose.

raidergirl3: So far I'm enjoying it. It isn't a fast read, but then I've not felt any compulsion to hurry it up either!

  5. Oooooh! This sounds really good, Terri! I'm in Texas (Texas by Michener) and Seattle during WWII (Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet). Usually I don't double dip, but Texas will probably take me a good two months to read. I'd gladly trade for this book!

  6. Madeleine: I'm following you too!

Trish: I've been curious about Hotel on the Corner ... and will be interested in your thoughts. I still haven't read anything by Michener!

  7. LOL--my mention of a trade was mostly in jest. :) I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to trade anything for my 20 pound Texas book! OK, it isn't really 20 pounds, but it sure feels like it.
